Supported video formats

Vidreno accepts every common video format your camera, phone or editing app is likely to spit out. If your file plays in a normal video player, it'll almost certainly upload fine.

Formats we accept

Format Extension Notes
MP4 .mp4 The default and most reliable choice. Plays everywhere.
QuickTime .mov Common on Mac and iPhone. Uploads cleanly.
AVI .avi Older format, still supported.
Windows Media .wmv Works fine for upload and playback.
Flash Video .flv Legacy format, accepted for archive uploads.
Matroska .mkv Great for high quality archives.
WebM .webm Browser native format, supported.

If you're not sure what to use, MP4 with H.264 video and AAC audio is the safest pick. It's what most cameras and phones export by default, and it's the most compatible across browsers and devices.

The upload dialog accepts anything the browser tags as a video. If your file is recognised as something else (for example, an audio only file), you'll see a small toast that says it was skipped because it isn't a video.

What about subtitles, multiple audio tracks, and HDR?

Vidreno keeps your file as you uploaded it. If your MKV has subtitle tracks or your MP4 has multiple audio streams, they'll be there in the source file. Browser playback will pick the default track.
